Brecksville UMC Seeks Music Director
As Malik Khalfani prepares to depart Northeast Ohio to continue his studies at Ohio State, the church has begun the search for a new Director of Music Ministry.

This is a part time position, approximately 20 hours per week. The job will begin in August 2021.

Position Overview
Brecksville UMCís Music Director provides music that enables individuals to worship and experience God. The Music Director leads and facilitates ensembles, musicians, and vocalists of all experiences and abilities to worship through music. They also use music as an avenue for spiritual growth for both the performer(s) and the greater church community.

Job Functions
  • Attend all weekly worship services.

  • Work with the Senior Pastor to choose appropriate music for traditional worship services.

  • Recruit and provide music leadership for vocal ensembles (choir and others). COVID-19 example: monthly virtual choir meetings, creation of virtual choir anthems, etc.

  • Recruit and provide music leadership for special ensembles (string ensemble, brass ensemble, or orchestra) for special annual services (i.e. Christmas Eve, Easter). COVID-19 example: collaborate and/or coordinate with special virtual musicians through finding volunteers, recording of music, and presentation of final virtual product.

  • Prepare and perform traditional worship hymns and other vocal music when necessary.

  • Maintain health of all church instruments and musical equipment (i.e. piano tuning, organ tuning, maintenance of bells, etc.)

  • Assist with special events that include music (i.e. Music with a Mission, an annual variety show fundraiser).

  • Coordinate special performances of musicians and ensembles outside of worship, as desired.

  • Oversee Worship Band Leader.

  • Manage annual budget for music departments, including modern worship music.

  • Maintain organization of music library, both physical and virtual.

  • Oversee proper licensing for music.

  • Attend weekly staff meetings.


Qualifications
  • High school degree or equivalent (required)

  • Bachelor degree in music or minimum 5 years equivalent experience in the field (preferred)

  • Knowledge of United Methodist hymns and ability to choose appropriate hymns based on scripture and the church calendar.


Skills
  • Conducting-- ability to lead an ensemble (vocal and instrumental) through effective and efficient rehearsals, and performances.

  • Knowledge of human voice, vocal pedagogy, and ability to demonstrate via example.

  • Ability to play the piano effectively and the ability to accompany.

  • Public speaking.

  • Basic knowledge of sound equipment and technology used for live performance, streaming, and recording.

  • Effective communication with other members of church staff, ensembles, and supervisors.

  • Accountability

  • Regular updates with the Senior Pastor and SPRC regarding essential job functions and areas of responsibilities within the church.
